OpenAI officially announced ChatGPT Health on January 7, 2026, marking a major step toward specialized AI for the healthcare sector. This new, dedicated experience allows users to securely connect their medical records and wellness apps to the intelligence of ChatGPT. By grounding conversations in personal health information, the tool provides more relevant and informed guidance for navigating health and wellness. The release comes as a response to massive user demand, with over 230 million people already asking health questions on the platform every week. This initiative transforms ChatGPT from a general knowledge engine into a specialized agent capable of interpreting complex biomarker data. The recent release of GPT-5.2-Codex provides the advanced reasoning necessary to handle high-stakes clinical data with greater accuracy.
ChatGPT Health differs from standard interactions by utilizing a separate, isolated environment with enhanced privacy protections. Conversations held within this space are encrypted and specifically excluded from training OpenAI foundation models to protect sensitive personal data. If a user begins a medical query in the general chat, the system will suggest moving to the Health space for these added layers of protection.
Users can integrate diverse data sources including laboratory results, visit summaries, and fitness stats from apps like Apple Health and MyFitnessPal. Through a partnership with b.well, the system connects to the largest network of live health data in the United States. This clinical grounding eliminates the need for manual reporting and reduces the risk of hallucinations by ensuring responses are based on verifiable medical history. The product was developed over two years in close collaboration with more than 260 physicians from 60 countries. It is evaluated against HealthBench, a framework designed to prioritize safety, clarity, and the appropriate escalation of medical care. This physician-led approach ensures the model acts as a supportive tool for understanding health patterns without replacing professional clinical advice. At launch, the service is available via a waitlist for ChatGPT Free, Plus, and Pro users in the United States and other eligible regions. It remains unavailable in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom due to ongoing regulatory navigation. Interested users can sign up for access through the official waitlist portal as OpenAI begins a phased rollout.
The launch of ChatGPT Health represents the emergence of "Vertical AI," where general models are fine-tuned for high-stakes, regulated industries. By acting as the interface layer for fragmented medical records, OpenAI is positioning itself to disrupt traditional patient portals and become a central hub for personal health management. The exclusion of European markets highlights the continued friction between rapid AI innovation and the stringent data sovereignty requirements of the EU AI Act.
