MTN Group said on August 27, 2026 that MTN Digital Infrastructure has entered a strategic partnership with a UAE-based data-center investment platform to accelerate AI-ready digital infrastructure across Africa. The vehicle is Africa Data Hub Holding Limited, with an initial focus on South Africa and Nigeria.
The UAE platform was founded by Tarek Al Ashram, a data-center developer and operator with a record in the Middle East. Bayobab, MTN’s digital connectivity business and a shareholder in the partnership, will provide open-access connectivity and go-to-market support across its pan-African network. MTN framed the deal as part of its Ambition 2030 strategy, arguing that cloud, AI workloads, and data-intensive services need locally hosted capacity if African markets are going to stay competitive.
What the partners say they bring
Mazen Mroué, CEO of MTN Group Digital Infrastructure, said the platform is meant to combine investment, operating expertise, connectivity, and market access for hyperscalers, cloud providers, enterprises, and technology companies. Al Ashram said the Middle East showed how large-scale data-center platforms can support cloud and AI growth, and that Africa now presents a similar demand picture.
The announcement does not disclose capacity targets, ownership splits, or a construction timetable. It positions Africa Data Hub Holding as the company through which future projects will be developed and scaled.
Decoded Take
African AI strategy keeps running into the same bottleneck: power, land, and capital-intensive halls rather than another chatbot distribution deal. MTN is trying to solve that by importing Gulf data-center operating experience instead of funding the whole stack on-balance-sheet. The open question is execution in South Africa and Nigeria, where grid reliability and permitting usually decide whether a press release becomes megawatts. Watch named sites, power agreements, and which hyperscalers actually contract capacity. Until those show up, this is a holding company with a map, not an AI factory.
