Hyundai Motor Group announced a landmark KRW 9 trillion investment to establish a premier innovation hub in the Saemangeum area of Gunsan City. This strategic initiative, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding with the South Korean government, positions the Group as a primary leader in the robotics, AI, and hydrogen energy sectors. The project is scheduled to begin construction in 2026, aiming to bridge the gap between advanced digital intelligence and physical hardware.
The core of the development features a hyper-scale AI data center designed to facilitate the implementation of Physical AI. With a planned capacity of 50,000 GPU units, this facility will process the massive datasets required for autonomous driving and software-defined vehicles. By housing intelligence and hardware in one location, the Group can accelerate the development of smarter, more responsive robotic systems.
A significant portion of the capital will also fund a robotics manufacturing cluster capable of producing 30,000 units annually. This facility will serve as a foundry, allowing automotive component suppliers to transition into the robotics industry. This collaborative approach aims to strengthen the domestic supply chain while leveraging the Group's existing manufacturing excellence to create global competitive advantages.
To power these energy-intensive operations, Hyundai will develop a gigawatt-scale solar infrastructure and a 200 MW-class hydrogen electrolyzer plant. The plant will utilize proprietary technology with over 90 percent localization to produce clean hydrogen at scale. This integrated energy value chain ensures that the innovation hub remains sustainable and contributes to Korea’s broader transition toward a hydrogen-based economy.
The project culminates in the creation of an AI Hydrogen Smart City, where advanced technologies converge into a living urban ecosystem. This living lab will test integrated logistics, safety, and transportation systems before expanding these solutions to global markets. The Group envisions this hub as a blueprint for future urban environments that prioritize both technological progress and environmental sustainability.
The economic impact of this investment is estimated at KRW 16 trillion, with the potential to create approximately 71,000 jobs. Beyond the financial figures, the project represents a core component of the Group’s broader KRW 125.2 trillion domestic investment strategy. By focusing on the Saemangeum region, Hyundai aims to stimulate regional growth while securing Korea's position as a global leader in future industrial innovation.
This strategic pivot represents Hyundai's transition from a traditional vehicle manufacturer to a comprehensive technology and energy provider. By integrating energy production, data processing, and physical robotics into a single closed-loop ecosystem, the Group is effectively building the infrastructure for a post-automotive world. This move addresses the critical industry bottlenecks of energy consumption and computing power, positioning Korea as a central player in the emerging global robotics market.
