Honeywell and Google Cloud have introduced an AI-powered retail ecosystem designed to transform how people shop in physical stores. Announced this week, the Smart Shopping Platform uses Google's Gemini models to provide digital-style personalization and navigation within the grocery aisle. The technology is scheduled to begin rolling out to retailers globally in February 2026. Shoppers using the platform on Honeywell CS32 Personal Shopper devices can link their loyalty accounts to unlock instant recommendations based on their buying habits. The system provides real-time product information and dynamic guidance, allowing customers to easily find items or select smart substitutions when a product is unavailable. This mimics the convenience of online shopping while maintaining the physical experience as seen on the official press release.
Retail employees also benefit from the technology through the CT70 mobile computer. This device allows associates to act as in-house experts by providing quick, AI-driven insights to customer questions about inventory or product locations. By empowering staff with real-time data, retailers can significantly improve customer service and operational efficiency.
David Barker, president of Honeywell Productivity Solutions and Services, noted that the platform addresses major pain points like unfindable items and lack of expert staff. He emphasized that the solution is ready to use, removing the need for retailers to maintain expensive internal AI development teams. This "out of the box" approach makes advanced generative AI accessible to a wider range of businesses according to Honeywell's newsroom. The collaboration involves 66degrees, a Google Cloud partner that ensures the AI models correctly integrate with specific retailer data. Built on the Honeywell Mobility Edge platform, the system bridges the gap between a store's digital inventory and the physical shelves. This ensures that recommendations and navigation paths are always accurate and helpful for the end user.
This partnership signals a strategic shift in the brick and mortar sector toward "agentic commerce," where AI agents facilitate physical world transactions. By integrating Google's Gemini directly into handheld hardware, Honeywell is positioning itself to outperform traditional competitors like Zebra Technologies. This launch demonstrates that the future of retail lies in turning mobile devices into intelligent companions that reduce labor costs while simultaneously increasing average basket sizes through hyper-personalized suggestions.
