Crusoe revealed plans on March 27, 2026, to build a new 900 megawatt AI factory campus in Abilene, Texas, to support Microsoft AI infrastructure. This new facility will sit adjacent to Crusoe’s existing operations, bringing the total capacity of the Abilene site to approximately 2.1 gigawatts. The project is designed to handle the massive computing power required by next generation artificial intelligence models and large scale workloads.
Land clearing and site preparation for the new campus have already started, with the first building expected to go live in mid-2027. This timeline continues a fast-paced development trend for the region, which has quickly become a center for technological innovation. The expansion includes two high density buildings and a dedicated on-site power plant to ensure the site remains resilient against grid fluctuations.
Each of the two new buildings is engineered to deliver 336 megawatts of critical IT load. This specific design supports the ultra high density requirements of modern GPU architectures and advanced silicon. To manage the intense heat generated by these systems, Crusoe is implementing closed loop liquid cooling that does not rely on evaporation, significantly reducing local water usage.
A key feature of the campus is its behind the meter energy infrastructure, which includes a 900 megawatt power plant and a battery storage system. This energy-first approach allows the facility to operate reliably without being solely dependent on the traditional utility grid. By managing its own power capacity, Crusoe can deliver massive infrastructure at a speed that traditional utility timelines often cannot support.
The development is expected to create thousands of construction jobs and hundreds of permanent positions for the Abilene community. Local officials estimate that the first eight buildings alone will contribute significantly to the property tax revenue for the city and Taylor County. This massive investment reinforces the region's role as an economic engine and provides long term value to the West Texas community.
This expansion represents a fundamental shift in the data center industry where power availability now dictates site selection over simple connectivity. By integrating on-site generation and long-duration storage through strategic partnerships, Crusoe is successfully bypassing the utility grid bottlenecks that have delayed billions of dollars in US infrastructure. This autonomous energy model establishes a new blueprint for hyperscalers who need to deploy massive AI capacity at a speed traditional grid interconnects cannot currently match.
