Singapore is accelerating its bid to become a global leader in artificial intelligence through a series of landmark initiatives announced during the Committee of Supply Debate 2026. Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong detailed a strategic reset designed to drive the economy toward a 2% to 3% annual growth target. The physical centerpiece of this ambition, Kampong AI, will serve as a focal point for talent and researchers to collaborate. Launching its pilot phase in March 2026, this integrated community will feature residential units for founders alongside high-tech lab spaces. The government expects the full ecosystem to be completed by 2028, creating a permanent center of gravity for innovation within the One-North district.

To drive adoption, the Champions of AI program will partner with select companies to embed automation into core business processes starting in late 2026. This initiative follows the success of pioneers like DBS, which reported record economic value of S$1 billion from its data and AI ventures in 2025. The government intends to use these pathfinders to show other firms how to successfully navigate the transition to an AI-enabled workforce.

Strategic AI Missions will also be launched across four critical sectors including advanced manufacturing, connectivity, finance, and healthcare. These missions will focus on solving specific industry problems by providing full-stack ecosystems that include datasets and computing resources. This targeted approach aims to shorten the journey from initial development to global market scaling.

This technological push comes as Singapore faces significant external pressures, including new US trade tariffs and energy supply risks from Middle East tensions. The Economic Strategy Review emphasizes that growth must now come from depth and specialized leadership rather than scale alone. By securing a lead in frontier sectors like quantum and decarbonization, the nation seeks to maintain its competitive trust premium in a fragmented world.

Ultimately, the strategy focuses on translating technological gains into high-quality jobs for Singaporeans. Government agencies will provide bespoke support for emerging enterprises to ensure they can scale internationally from their Singaporean base. DPM Gan noted that while the road ahead is uncertain, acting early allows the nation to shape change rather than merely reacting to it.
