Hyundai Motor Group said it has put its Data Flywheel into full operation, a loop that takes driving data from vehicles, trains and validates autonomous models, then pushes improved software back onto the fleet. The group presented the system at an Autonomous Driving Media Day at 42dot headquarters in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. A matching PR Newswire release dated the announcement September 12, 2026.
Minwoo Park, president of the Advanced Vehicle Platform division and CEO of 42dot, framed the race as an operations problem rather than a feature checklist. Competitiveness, he said, now comes from how much data a company can collect, how fast it can learn, and how quickly those lessons reach production software.
Hyundai Motor and Kia sell more than 7 million vehicles a year across about 190 countries. The flywheel still starts smaller than that footprint. The group said it runs about 40 dedicated collection vehicles around the clock, gathering construction zones, severe weather, abrupt lane changes, parked cars on narrow streets, and other edge cases. New pieces added this year include hard-example mining that ranks scenes the model already fails, a continuous training pipeline that folds fresh data back in, and virtual validation that rebuilds real drives as 3D scenes with Gaussian Splatting so engineers can replay unsafe cases without putting a car there again. Korea and U.S. teams work a follow-the-sun schedule. A Special Event Recorder is being wired in so significant on-road events become training fuel. Data Union is a planned common sensor and data standard across Hyundai Motor, Kia, 42dot, and Motional.
The product plan is a dual track the group announced with NVIDIA in March. Track one puts NVIDIA’s vehicle AI stack into software-defined cars: Level 2+ in the first half of 2028, Level 2++ in the second half, with sensors across the four brands moving toward NVIDIA DRIVE Hyperion 10. Track two is Atria AI, an end-to-end stack from the AVP division and 42dot, with Level 2++ production aimed at the second half of 2029. Hyundai also plans a real-world Level 4 pilot in Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Metropolitan City by year-end, with South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, using an Atria-equipped SDV Pace Car on public roads.
42dot is building a second model family beside end-to-end control. Vision-Language-Action adds language-based reasoning on top of camera input so the car can explain a decision, not only output a trajectory. That work is still in simulation. On-road testing is slated from late 2026 into early 2027. The group released Seoul footage of an Atria testbed at Level 2++: an executive ride-along with Park and Atria group lead Seonggyun Jeong, unedited clips from Gangnam, Jamsil, and rainy Pangyo, and a reel of edge cases such as roadside parking, cut-ins, unprotected lefts, and pedestrians in dense traffic.

The flywheel is Hyundai saying out loud that the bottleneck is data ops, not a single model drop. Forty collection cars against seven million annual sales is the gap they are trying to close with SER, hard-example mining, and a shared Data Union. The NVIDIA 2028 dates buy a production ADAS stack while Atria and VLA catch up in 2029. That hedge only works if the two stacks share enough sensors and labels that the later in-house model is not starting from a different car. Watch the Gwangju Level 4 pilot: whether it is a closed circuit with a press van or a route that feeds new failures into training every week. Watch whether VLA leaves the simulator on the late-2026 calendar, and whether Motional’s robotaxi data actually shows up in the same union as a Sonata on a Korean ring road. If those pipes stay separate, Hyundai has a brochure cycle, not a flywheel.
