OpenAI has introduced Workspace Agents, a significant advancement in enterprise automation that allows ChatGPT to function as an autonomous member of the team. Unlike previous custom GPTs, these cloud-native assistants are powered by Codex technology to execute multi-step reasoning and track workflows without human supervision. They are currently available in research preview for Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Teacher subscribers.
These agents can be integrated directly into popular productivity platforms such as Slack and Google Workspace. By connecting to tools like Salesforce and SharePoint, the agents can perform repeatable tasks and even run on a schedule. This enables teams to delegate report generation or code writing to an AI that remains active even when the user is offline.
To ensure organizational safety, OpenAI has implemented granular role-based access controls and write-action protections. By default, any high-risk action like deleting files or sending emails requires manual approval from a human in the loop. Admins can also manage whether agents use personal credentials or shared service accounts to prevent unauthorized data exposure.
The agents support the new Model Context Protocol, allowing businesses to link the AI directly to internal databases and proprietary knowledge bases. This means the agents can understand the specific context of a company's unique data structures while maintaining secure communication channels. These tools also support specialized Skills to help agents follow defined processes more effectively. While the potential is vast, certain limits apply to ensure enterprise security and stability. Workspace agents are currently off by default for Enterprise workspaces and remain unavailable to customers utilizing Enterprise Key Management. The free research preview is scheduled to end on May 6, 2026, after which OpenAI will implement a credit-based billing system to manage the high computational demands of autonomous agent execution.
The launch of Workspace Agents represents a definitive shift from the era of simple chatting to a world of asynchronous orchestration. By moving away from reactive prompts toward autonomous cloud-native execution, OpenAI is positioning ChatGPT as a foundational layer of business operations rather than just a productivity tool. This transition to a utility-based credit system by May 2026 mirrors the evolution of cloud computing, where businesses pay for outcomes and computation rather than seat-based licenses.
