Open Cosmos has officially launched ConnectedCosmos, a specialized Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation designed to provide sovereign and secure communications. Announced in Barcelona on March 2, 2026, this initiative seeks to offer businesses and government bodies a resilient alternative to existing transcontinental networks. The new infrastructure integrates real-time Earth Observation intelligence with protected connectivity to ensure operational safety. The project represents a significant move for the UK and European space industries by reducing dependence on global mega-constellations. ConnectedCosmos links Open Cosmos’ existing Earth Observation capabilities with a new sovereign backbone. This combination allows users to detect potential threats in real time and use actionable intelligence to address them immediately.

One of the most notable technical features is the use of Optical Inter-Satellite Links (ISL). This technology creates a gateway-less sovereign space mesh that routes data directly between satellites. By doing so, the system physically bypasses compromised subsea cables and hostile terrestrial infrastructure that are often vulnerable to physical or cyber disruption.

The constellation will operate using high-priority Ka-band spectrum filings from Liechtenstein. Open Cosmos successfully brought these filings back into use at the start of 2026 through its first satellite launches. Utilizing this specific spectrum enables the network to maintain clear signals even within an increasingly crowded and contested orbital environment.

Rafel Jordà Siquier, the founder and CEO of Open Cosmos, stated that the constellation provides nations with a reliable alternative for true sovereignty in orbit. He noted that by combining secure communications with real-time intelligence, the company is delivering actionable resilience rather than just simple connectivity. This strategy aims to ensure that critical data remains trusted and immediately usable in disrupted environments.

Looking ahead into 2026, Open Cosmos plans to maintain its momentum with additional satellite launches and the formation of new partnerships. The company continues to expand its manufacturing footprint across Europe, with established facilities in the UK, Spain, Portugal, and Greece. These efforts are expected to fuel the rapid growth of both the constellation and the company’s regional workforce.
