NEURA Robotics and the Technical University of Munich (TUM) have officially unveiled the TUM RoboGym, Europe’s largest scientific training center for Physical AI. Located at the TUM Convergence Center at Munich Airport, the facility spans 2,300 square meters and is designed to accelerate the development of intelligent humanoid robots. Starting in mid-2026, a large fleet of robots will undergo rigorous training under real-world conditions to master complex physical tasks.
The project represents a significant financial commitment with a total investment of approximately €17 million. NEURA Robotics is providing the majority of the funding, contributing €11 million toward hardware and infrastructure. This partnership between private industry and the Munich Institute of Robotics and Machine Intelligence (MIRMI) aims to bridge the gap between academic research and commercial application.
According to NEURA Robotics CEO David Reger, the primary challenge for modern robotics is no longer hardware but the availability of high-quality training data. The RoboGym serves as a physical laboratory where robots can learn through human demonstration and environmental interaction. This approach addresses the sim-to-real gap that often hinders robots transitioning from digital simulations to the messy reality of the physical world.
Data generated at the Munich facility will be integrated into the Neuraverse, a hardware-agnostic platform designed to democratize robotic learning. This ecosystem allows a skill mastered by one robot to be shared across a global network, effectively creating an app store for physical capabilities. By centralizing this intelligence, the partners hope to set a global standard for how machines interact with their surroundings.
Beyond technical advancement, the initiative is a strategic move for European technological sovereignty. Prof. Lorenzo Masia, Director of the TUM RoboGym, noted that the center creates a unique infrastructure for researchers and students to remain competitive against global rivals. While the initial focus is on research and development, the RoboGym will eventually open its doors to industry partners and start-ups. This long-term vision positions the Munich hub as a central node for the burgeoning Physical AI economy.
