MESH AG, a spin-off from ETH Zurich, has successfully closed a 2.9 million CHF ($3.8 million) seed funding round to accelerate robotic automation in construction. This investment aims to deploy its specialized software and robotics platform to the global rebar industry. By automating labor-intensive and hazardous tasks, the company provides a direct solution to the chronic labor shortages facing modern building sectors.

The funding round was supported by a heavy-hitting group of strategic investors including ABB Robotics Ventures, Sika, and Shimizu Corporation. Other key participants include Apprecia Capital, buildify.earth, and Aargauische Kantonalbank. These partners bring a wealth of expertise in specialty chemicals, general contracting, and industrial automation to help MESH scale its operations worldwide.

The core of the MESH ecosystem is an intuitive software platform that connects digital design directly to robotic production. This "no-code" system allows operators to run complex robotic cells without specialized programming knowledge. The platform manages everything from initial production planning to the automated assembly of complex reinforcement structures.

A significant technological advantage of the MESH system is its ability to create 3D reinforcement cages that function as both steel skeletons and concrete formwork. When combined with specific concrete admixtures developed by partners like Sika, the mesh holds the concrete in place during the pour. This innovation eliminates the need for expensive timber molds and significantly reduces material waste on site. This robotic technology has already been validated through industrial deployments and infrastructure projects like Switzerland's new Gotthard tunnel. Working alongside Swiss building supplier SABAG AG, MESH systems have processed more than one million rebar elements in a production environment. This transition from university research at ETH Zurich to real-world application marks a major turning point for the startup. Based in Birr, Switzerland, MESH is now focusing on expanding its engineering team to further refine its machine-tending and tying capabilities. The new capital will also support the international expansion of its "ACTUATE" and "ASSEMBLE" robotic modules. The company remains committed to bridging the gap between digital architecture and physical construction through scalable automation.
