Travis Kalanick Launches Atoms to Automate Global Industry with Specialized Robotics

Uber co-founder Travis Kalanick has officially unveiled Atoms, a robotics powerhouse dedicated to automating the foundational layers of the global economy. After eight years in stealth mode, the company is emerging with a clear mission to move the world through physical automation. Atoms currently focuses on three core pillars: food infrastructure, industrial mining, and autonomous transport systems.

The venture operates on a philosophy called Digitizing the Physical World, which seeks to apply software-like efficiency to physical tasks. Kalanick describes this as a three-step cycle involving the understanding, prediction, and control of the physical environment. By treating physical objects with the same logic as digital data, Atoms aims to unlock a new era of industrial abundance.

A centerpiece of this launch is the strategic acquisition of Pronto, an autonomous driving startup founded by Anthony Levandowski. This move reunites Kalanick with his former Uber collaborator to accelerate the Atoms Transport division. Pronto technology provides the robotic wheelbase needed to move goods and machinery across complex industrial sites like mines and warehouses.

Unlike many modern tech firms, Atoms rejects the trend of building bipedal humanoid robots. Instead, the company champions gainfully employed robots, which are specialized machines designed for hyper-specific industrial workflows. Kalanick argues that while humanoids are suited for domestic chores, specialized machines offer the throughput required for massive industrial scale.

The company organizational structure reflects a massive polymath effort spanning ten distinct domains, including chemistry, real estate, and energy.
