Google said on September 7, 2026 that it is expanding an artificial intelligence trial with Cathay Pacific to help pilots avoid heat-trapping contrails on ultra-long-haul flights. Cathay is Google’s first commercial airline partner in Asia for the work, and the first carrier the pair say has tested the method on routes longer than 16 hours.

Contrails form when aircraft fly through cold, humid air. Some fade quickly. Others spread into cloud-like layers that trap heat. Google said those persistent streaks account for roughly one-third of aviation’s climate impact. The company’s system combines AI forecasts, satellite imagery, and weather data to mark the zones where warming contrails are likely, then sends a planned altitude change to dispatchers and the cockpit, in the same way crews already dodge turbulence.

Cathay feeds those forecasts into its Electronic Flight Folder over inflight Wi-Fi, so pilots see the Google advice next to ordinary operational numbers. An operational trial that began in late 2025 targeted more than 100 flights. More than 80 followed contrail-avoidance routes. Google’s satellite analysis estimated those flights cut the warming impact of their contrails by about 40 percent. The Hong Kong to Singapore corridor was one of the test routes, and Google said interventions on that single path accounted for more than half of the trial’s estimated reductions.

The companies are now opening a larger second phase across Cathay’s Asia and transpacific network and are working with Contrails.org, a nonprofit that studies mitigation. Google’s post, by product manager Kemal Armada and software engineer Max Vogler, argues the method can start on today’s aircraft and fuel. The adjustments stay inside ordinary safety limits and are not meant to change the passenger experience.
