The Global Innovation Fund announced a $500,000 equity investment in Reme.D, an Egyptian biotech company tackling the diagnostic gap in emerging markets. This funding supports the local production of medical test kits that operate without the need for refrigeration. The initiative aims to provide reliable healthcare tools to facilities where electricity and cold-chain logistics are often unavailable.

At the heart of Reme.D’s innovation is a proprietary blend of nanotechnology and advanced lyophilization techniques. These freeze-drying methods allow testing reagents to remain chemically stable at temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius for several months. By removing the dependency on a continuous cold chain, the company eliminates a primary cause of reagent spoilage in hot climates.

These locally manufactured kits are significantly more affordable than imported alternatives, often costing one-quarter of the price. The streamlined molecular diagnostic protocols also reduce laboratory processing times by up to 70 percent compared to traditional methods. This efficiency is critical for managing infectious diseases like HIV, tuberculosis, and hepatitis in low-resource settings.

The investment will facilitate a move into a new 2,000 square meter manufacturing facility in Cairo. This expansion allows the company to scale its production capacity and address existing packaging bottlenecks that limit current output. With increased volume, Reme.D plans to expand its commercial footprint into new markets like Nigeria and Libya. Managing Director Lily Steele noted that Reme.D is tackling a fundamental gap by manufacturing high-accuracy diagnostics affordably. She emphasized the importance of supporting homegrown African innovations that demonstrate technical resilience. The company continues to develop its pipeline to include testing for oncology, genetic disorders, and maternal health.
