Microsoft AI Absorbs Cove Team to Bolster Visual Collaboration and Copilot Features

Microsoft AI is expanding its talent pool by bringing on the entire team from Cove, an AI-driven collaboration startup. The transition marks a strategic move for the tech giant to enhance its visual workspace capabilities within its Copilot ecosystem. This move signals a deeper commitment to integrating non-linear AI workflows into Microsoft's productivity suite.

Transition and Platform Shutdown

As part of this transition, the standalone Cove product will officially cease operations on April 1, 2026. The startup has already stopped accepting new signups and is urging existing users to export their data immediately through a provided migration tool. All user data is scheduled to be permanently deleted shortly after the service concludes.

From Google Maps to Microsoft AI

Founded in late 2023 by former Google and Uber executives, Cove gained significant attention for its unique canvas-first approach. Founders Stephen Chau, Mike Chu, and Andy Szybalski will now contribute their expertise in spatial collaboration to Microsoft's evolving AI strategy. Their background in building core Google Maps features brings a highly specialized perspective to spatial AI.

Visual Workspace Innovation

Cove previously raised $6 million in seed funding from prominent investors like Sequoia Capital to build an infinite workspace. This environment allowed users to brainstorm alongside AI agents by pulling in context from various digital sources like PDFs. The platform recently expanded to include community-built AI apps that emphasized interactive and shareable workflows.

Strategic Realignment

The acquisition coincides with a broader reorganization at Microsoft AI intended to unify commercial and consumer efforts. While top leadership focuses on frontier superintelligence, the Cove team will likely address functional gaps in enterprise Copilot tools. This integration aims to improve adoption rates as Microsoft competes with rivals in the generative AI space.
