Amazon unveiled a massive €33.7 billion investment plan for Spain at MWC26 Barcelona, marking its largest technology commitment in the country to date. This move adds €18 billion to its previous 2024 projections, focusing on expanding the Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure in the Aragón region. The announcement coincides with the company's 15th anniversary in Spain, signaling a long-term bet on the nation's digital future. Read more about AWS news.

The project aims to support approximately 29,900 jobs annually while contributing an estimated €31.7 billion to Spain's national GDP through 2035. Beyond direct data center operations, the initiative includes 1,800 new roles within a specialized supply chain and server manufacturing ecosystem. These positions span from highly skilled technicians to construction and security personnel.

For the first time, Amazon will establish a server manufacturing plant for assembly and testing alongside a dedicated AI and machine learning repair facility in Aragón. These additions allow the company to manage hardware lifecycles more efficiently and reduce environmental waste through a circular economy strategy. This infrastructure is essential to support the increasing demand for advanced cloud capabilities across the continent.

The expansion reaches all three provinces of Aragón, making Amazon the first major tech firm to bring data centers to the province of Teruel. This regional focus leverages the area's land availability and strong local support for digital transformation. By decentralizing its infrastructure, Amazon creates a resilient network capable of powering various sectors from finance to public education.

Supporting this growth are 100 solar and wind projects across Spain, aligning with Amazon's goal to be net-zero carbon by 2040. The company is also investing €17.2 million in local water stewardship projects in Aragón to ensure operations return more water to the community than they consume. These initiatives include smart irrigation systems that help local farmers save millions of liters of water annually.

Leading Spanish organizations such as Telefónica, BBVA, and Iberia already utilize the AWS Spain Region to accelerate their digital transformation. This massive capital injection ensures that European businesses have the low-latency access required for next-generation generative AI applications. Amazon gains a strategic stronghold in Southern Europe by transforming Spain into a vertically integrated digital hub. By building its own server manufacturing and repair facilities, the company reduces logistics costs and aligns with circular economy goals while securing the massive compute power needed for its long-term strategic partnership with OpenAI. This localized infrastructure provides a competitive edge in European data sovereignty, allowing Amazon to meet strict regulatory demands and serve high-demand AI markets with lower latency. Furthermore, the abundance of renewable energy in Aragón allows Amazon to scale its power-hungry data centers without compromising its global sustainability commitments.
